Warming in the Maldives

Key messages:

  • Temperature rise is uniform on the domain
  • Under a +2°C and a +3°C global warming, the projected local warming is lower than the global warming (less than +1.5°C under the +2°C global warming and less than +2.5°C under the +3°C global warming

Why is the content of this map important?

Climate change is essentially a temperature increase. There is a good agreement between models, which makes the results highly credible. Temperature governs many aspects of natural life, as well as human activities (air conditioning).

Which sectors are affected by this result?

This expected temperature rise is moderate, but could impact the energy and tourism sector. Indirectly temperature rise produces a sea-level rise (at global scale), which can be very detrimental to such low surface elevation islands.

What is shown on the maps?

The maps show a uniform warming of +1/+1.5°C warming with +2°C global warming, +2/+2.5°C warming with +3°C global warming. There is an excellent agreement between models.

Details and further information:

The table below shows the annual cycle of temperature (°C).

month J F M A M J J A S O N D
1971-2000 27 27 27 28 28 28 27 27 27 27 27 27

Additional information:

The climate change indicators have been calculated from the CNRM/CNRM-ARPEGE52, ECEARTH/SMHI-RCA, NORESM/BCCR-WRF331 simulations.
